Not So Free Web Sites

When searching the Internet for business opportunities on line, you will undoubtedly come across some affiliate programs that offer you a free web site when you sign up with them. More often than not, there is absolutely nothing wrong with the program and the promises made are usually attainable if you work at it. (Do not expect to become rich overnight)

Obviously, nothing in this world is truly free and the person promoting the affiliate program that you joined will be earning money through your efforts. eg you will now be in his Down line. The more people in his down line, the more money he makes. That is after all, how the affiliate programs work and it is now up to you to build your down line, which again, depending on the program, generates even more income for your sponsor. Needless to say, you won’t begrudge your sponsor any of this, as he provided you with a free ready-made site and your only cost has or will be for the domain name and hosting (minimal).

Depending on the program, there will almost certainly be a training module, which you will feel compelled to follow and it will be in your interest to subscribe to various Companies that are supported by your site and are recommended by your sponsor. These will sometimes be free with an option to upgrade to premium status in order for you to generate a higher income. In addition, you will soon realize that in order for you to start building your down line, you need traffic and need then to subscribe to things like traffic generators and auto responders etc. Each of these subscriptions will be recommended by your sponsor.

All of these items you have subscribed to, you would have had to anyway if you had started from scratch and added to that would have been the cost of building your web site, which you were given free. So all in all, not a bad deal. But is it?

Lets take a closer look at the free web site, which incidentally, you can upgrade to a bigger site and different color if you wish. The site will almost certainly look professional and have pre written articles, be full of content with lots of links and banners or buttons in the side bars.

So far you have:

1. Free Web Site 0.00

2. Domain Name 15.00

3. Hosting 25.00

4. Free trial auto responder

5. Free registration to say 4 affiliate programs

6. Subscription to Traffic Generator 25.00

7. Subscription to premium affiliates 150.00

At the very basic level, your costs have mounted from free to $215.00 give or take. If your sponsor was to get 10% in commissions that gives him $21.50 but remember, this is at the basic level, if you start to subscribe to other items recommended by your sponsor, he will earn more. Remember also, he will probably be getting an ongoing commission for the duration of your subscriptions. Still a good deal though. After all you still have your web site and the benefit of your sponsors tuition.

Okay, so we agree, on the surface it is a very good deal. All you have to do is promote your site and you can be generating the same sort of income. This will take time, but it can happen as long as you remain focussed.

There is another income stream however, that you may not be aware of and one which your sponsor may be making money from due to your efforts. Remember the links and buttons and banners in your side bar? These are generally pointing to other pages on your web site, but some will almost certainly be pointing to other sites, which your sponsor is affiliated to and is getting commission on! Remember this, it is your site, it should be you getting this revenue.

How to check if this is happening.

When you registered with the affiliate programs on your site, you will have been given an id number. This ID is placed in the source code of your web page affiliate links. This is how the company you are affiliated with know who to pay. If you know anything about source code, you can simply go to your web control panel and check your index.html file.

An easier way of checking is to open any of your web pages with links on, right click on the page and a pop up box will appear. Scroll to View page source and left click. The source code page will open. You can’t do anything to harm the code through this window so you can Scroll through the page until you see what looks like an affiliate id. It may take you a few minutes to familiarize yourself, but when you come across any ID’s, check to see if they are yours. If they aren’t yours, then they will almost certainly be your sponsors. He is making money through your site without you knowing!

What to do next.

If the id in question is an affiliate code for a Company you have not registered with, you can either leave well alone and let your sponsor enjoy the rewards (after all, he did give you your site for free!) or you can register yourself with the Company and change the id to yours. To do this, you will need to edit your html files or get someone competent to do it for you.

In summary,

I consider the Free web site offers to be good value for money but you can maximise your potential by scrutinizing your source code.

Good luck.
